yesterday i finally developed the slide film that i shot during our trip to indonesia back in August…when i got them back from the shop (the only slide processing company on Oahu, Rainbow Photo Video) i was beaming ear to ear, instantly transported back to the magical islands of bali and java.
there was a mysterious pile of trash sitting on my street which revealed, upon inspection, a sewing machine! its darling, however the poor old feller is missing his pedal and power cord….we’ll have to do some ebay scouring in order to get him up and running.
weirdly, i had to take my serger into the sewing machine hospital yesterday, as it was making the most hideous clanking sound and threatening to snap a needle. the repair man said it had some rust forming on some of the parts, and he was curious to know how long i had been sewing with it on kauai vs. here on oahu (…..as if kauai is saltier?) anyway, i shouldve taken my grandma’s advice and made a cover for my machines a while ago….she makes these cute garments/covers for her appliances: toaster, computer, computer keyboard, printer, sewing machine…but not rice cooker, i dont know why not. she also has a funny way of lining her kitchen rubbish can with a plastic bag (ok, not odd), but then putting a smaller liner bag in that one! i guess its so that she only has to throw out the small bag, a testament to how little rubbish she makes. its one of those ingenious things that looks bizarre at first, but creates a much tidier life.
anyway i had fun introducing my machines to each other. they are so cute. if i had more space i would have an entire orphanage for abandoned machines who were left to live on the streets.
We are a Neilsen family! All my life I’ve wondered how to become one…and now my dreams have come true!
Also, they gave us $30 cash in the mail.
All I have to do in return is keep a TV watching diary for one week and send it to the Neilsen people….I am so into this! If a guest comes over and the TV is on, I log them into the diary. Even though I don’t watch that TV all that often, its still fun to participate in something that I thought about as a kid.
Tangent::: since we are on the topic of TV. Earlier I wrote about how jazzed I was on The Universe series on The History Channel….well, the next night I returned to get another fix of scientific-mind-blowage and they were airing a huge serious show about Nostradamus, astrology, and the end of days. Ugh, it was so bogus and made me question the integrity of this network….c’mon astrology?!
it was time for new tags for products….so i said “just a sec” to the sewing machine and “oh how i missed you” to ink and paper.
yea, it would be so super easy to send some jpg. images to a digital printing company on the mainland and have them churn out some glossy tags….but i want something resonant, so you see handmade quirky tactile one-of-a-kind hangtags describing/introducing the same kind of clothing. its a detail i havent seen used by other companies and its utmost importantly key that machinemachine stuff’s original.
new favorite thing:: i recently bought a year-long subscription to the audiobook giant Audible.com, which wasnt the cheapest thing exactly (about $9.50 per book and i’ll get 24 books), but totally worth it for me because i only have the patience and time to read fiction books but am always interested in non-fiction texts. these are some wish list items and a few that i have already purchased.
